About Peace Corps

The US Peace Corps (pronounced like core) was founded by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. While much has changed within the Peace Corps and the world at large, the mission remains unchanged.

The Peace Corps seeks to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals:

Goal 1: To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women

Goal 2: To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served

Goal 3: To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans

One aim of this blog is to actively contribute to Goal 3: helping Americans to understand more about Indonesia and Indonesian culture.

Since 1965, over 220,000 volunteers have served in over 140 countries around the world. Volunteers serve for 27 months in sectors that include Education, Health, Youth in Development, Agriculture, Community Economic Development, and Environment.

While service in the Peace Corps is a major commitment, volunteers gain life-long skills while building life-long relationships. The benefits during and after service don’t hurt either. For more information, check out their website here. Each volunteer’s experience is unique, it really does help to talk to a local recruiter, your local RPCV community, and currently serving volunteers in different regions of the world.

Please feel free to send any questions about my service, Indonesia or Peace Corps my way via the feedback form on the Contact page, and I will answer to the best of my ability!
